SACRED COWS

SACRED COWS

HAS THE POWER CAT BECOME A SACRED COW?

THEN WHY ARE THEY FORGETTING THE COW?

WHY IS THE STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE

LEAVING BEHIND THEIR MANDATES?

This will get a lot of flack I am sure but the Kansas State Regents and the administration seem to have gotten football and basket ball ahead of itself.

Now I am a fan of K-State Football and Basketball (not a big fan of the BB coach). The alumni are wild about support of the school. the school has done so much during it time as one of the first land grant colleges. But the tenents that that govern what the school is seems to be getting lost.

The cost of school for its undergraduates keeps accelerating past the rate of inflation and now there is a money crisis that is taking away some of the institutions fundamental responsibilities.

Research and Extension is as major a part of the K-State mandate as education. In fact both of these areas are actually more tied to education than even some class room experiences. Yet these are going the way of the Dodo bird.

The Kansas State Experiment Station at Fort Hays started the year ten positions down and now have laid off another two. The budget for many things around there is zero. In fact a very generous person stepped up and paid for the plants that the station puts out every year.

Now the John C. Pair Horticulture Center near Haysville is being shut down. The employees are going to be offered positions elsewhere. ELSEWHERE? They are laying off people all over the state. This is as dumb a statement for ‘educated’ people to make as it comes.

Every county in Kansas is being pressed to pick up more and more of the cost of Extension work in their counties. As a state we already pay extension people less that almost every other state in the nation. Most of the Extension agents have Masters degrees and they are expected to ignore all other opportunities to work for a state that does not value them.

I have noticed that there is no reduction of the salaries of the president or the upper portions of the University at all. There are professors that retain their income and Emeritus Status without spending more than a handful of day in the classroom.

Now the athletic department is not the real contention here. Football and Basketball actually pay for themselves and most of the other athletic programs. It is hard to see how a coach is worth several million dollars a year. But that is just me.

But the most important things other than a cost effective education is being put on the back door step. Maybe the Bio Hazard Facility is more sexy but the research into crops and other ag commodities is the bread and butter of K-State.

My advice to Governor Colyer, the Legislature, and the Board of Regents, DON’T BLOW IT. People are getting fed up.

I don’t think you were tough enough on the Administrative salaried personal and the Professors who often use graduate students to instruct in the classroom. As for high Coach salaries, sometimes it sounds extravagant; but if the program is paying it’s way (and sometimes covering other lesser sports departments costs) it is hard to kick that Cash Cow.
