THINGS WON’T SOUND THE SAME

THINGS WON’T SOUND THE SAME

“A GOOD FRIEND IS HARD TO FIND, HARD TO LOSE,

AND IMPOSSIBLE TO FORGET.”

Friends For Life

On March 2nd you might have noticed a tear in the eyes of some of the toughest cowboys you will ever know.  Especially at Pretty Prairie.  Anyone who knows a little bit about rodeo knows the name of Hadley Barrett.  For forty years he was the voice of the Pretty Prairie Rodeo (the worlds largest night time rodeo).  Hadley was scheduled to voice the San Antonio PRCA event at the end of this month at age 87.

Hadley’s voice is the sound that you hear at rodeo and everyone else lives up to the standards, knowledge, and friendliness coming behind him.  Many awards and praise have come his way in his long career.

For all the years I went to Pretty Prairie Hadley’s voice and humor was the sound of the rodeo.  He had a special reason for loving Pretty Prairie though, this is where he met his wife, this was her home town.

Besides announcing the biggest rodeos in the country everyone who knew him always appreciated the fact that he was a good guy and a friend even if you had just met him.  And how he got started in the business is a good cowboy story.

Hadley rode in the rodeo, he also sang.  Sometimes he would have someone step in for him while he went down to ride a bull.  He would sing at rodeo dances.  When he was riding one night the announcer that was scheduled to call the rodeo was prevented from being there.  They knew he had a good voice and asked him to call the event.  He was a natural.

When Rodeo was actually on network television it was normally Hadley that was the voice or part of the team that announced the broadcasts.  He knew the people involved first hand, knew the events first hand, and set the bar high for those who came into the announcing profession very high.  He also helped all those young announcers that were rising up behind him.  No doubt he had an effect on every announcer that he worked with and those that just had him for an example.

There is no doubt that there is a big welcome for Hadley Barrett up in the sky and he will be soon be announcing the Big rodeo.

SO LONG HADLEY.  Grab a cup of mud, keep the registration line open, and while you wait, sing a tune for the folks.
